Advanced Beauty Tools: Hi-Tech Beauty Modality Comparison
Table of Contents
While there are so many different modalities for beauty, this article focuses on some of the more popular advanced beauty modalities currently on the market. By advanced, I’m referring to modalities that require power and can be found in a professional setting. These would include (but are not limited to) microcurrent, high frequency, microneedle, and light therapy. Each one has amazing benefits.
If you’re confused about which modality does what, this article will help explain the benefits of each. All of the modalities that we discuss have at home options so you can do treatments in the comfort of your own home.
Here is an overview and comparison of the types of modalities discussed:
Microcurrent
Microcurrent uses electrical “micro” or “nano” current to stimulate facial muscles, improve skin tone, minimizes fine lines and provides an overall lift to your face naturally. Microcurrent is a non-invasive “workout” for your face. Just like the gym for your body, the results are cumulative – regular treatments provide lasting results. There is no down time and you often see immediate results, sometimes so dramatic that the treatment is often referred to as a “non-surgical face lift”.
Microcurrent is painless and works with all skin types, but there are some contraindications to be aware of (metal implants, heart conditions, to name a few) before starting this protocol. There is no down time for microcurrent. For more information on microcurrent, check out these articles:

Microneedle
Microneedle is a treatment using either a roller, stamp or electric powered pen with small needles that poke microscopic holes in the skin to cause damage. This triggers a response in the body to produce collagen to heal the wounds which improves skin texture, minimizes pores and reduces fine lines and wrinkles.
Microneedle works with all skin types and is mildly to very uncomfortable depending on the depth of the treatment. There is some down time with this modality, as sometimes the wounds bleed depending on the depth of the treatment and post treatment feels like a sunburn for a few days.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses a low-frequency and Electro Muscle Stimulation to activate skin metabolism and stimulates collagen production to strengthen and lift for plumper, healthier skin.
Ultrasound is painless and works with all skin types, but there are some contraindications to be aware of (metal implants, heart conditions, to name a few) before starting this protocol. There is no down time with ultrasound therapy.
Light Therapy
Light therapy uses red and near-infrared light and has a wide range of health benefits which include (but not limited to) reducing inflammation and pain, increase blood circulation, stimulate collagen and promote healing of joints and muscles. Light therapy can also be used to improve acne as well as increasing hair growth.
Light therapy is non-invasive, relaxing and relatively quick treatments, usually about 10 minutes a day. When using light therapy, you typically can only do a particular treatment area every 6 hours, as it takes that long for the cells to metabolize the energy. Something to keep in mind when using for inflammation and pain. Light therapy works with all skin types and there is no down time.
These are just a few of the most popular hi-tech beauty modalities currently being used. There are also many non-tech modalities as well, such as chemical peels, cryotherapy, jade rolling, facial yoga, dermaplaning, gua sha, to name a few. Look for more information on these modalities coming soon!
