Organize your closet.
Do you reach for the same 5 things in your closet because you think you have nothing to wear? Check out this blog post for ideas to organize your closet: https://bestbeautyhacks.com/top-10-steps-to-organize-your-closet/
Design your closet.
What would make your closet more inviting? Think about the lighting. Is it too harsh or not bright enough? What about the color of the walls? Does the paint need a fresh coat in a beautiful, new hue to provide an inviting backdrop to your wardrobe? Is the space being utilized efficiently with shelves and hanging space? Does your closet have all the functionality you need with space for everything including jewelry and handbags? Think of creative storage and display solutions based on the space and needs.
Hone your personal style.
Do you prefer classic or edgy? Florals or neutrals? Discern what really looks good on you based on your body shape, hair color and skin tone. How would you describe your personal style?
Wear clothes that make you feel confident. Do you have items in your closet that you absolutely love to wear because you feel like a million bucks? Items that are comfortable and have that “made for you” fit? Items that you get compliments every time you wear them? Choose items that when you wear them, they look like they were made just for you.
Purge
Now that you have defined your personal style and designed your closet space, it’s time to purge! The best way to do this is to take everything out of your closet and put it on your bed. Use your personal style criteria to measure each item against with a “yes”, “no” or “maybe”. Take each item one at a time and ask yourself the following questions:
- · Does this fit my personal style?
- · Is it comfortable to wear?
- · Is it in good shape? (not worn out or damaged beyond repair)
If the item fits your personal style, in good shape and is comfortable, hang it back in your closet.
For the “maybe” items, do they just need repairs or alterations to make them a “yes”? If “yes”, sort these into an alterations/repair section. Also, determine if you can style these items into 3 separate outfits based on your personal style. This will determine the item’s versatility. If you are able to do this, then hang them back in your closet. If not, it’s time to let them go.
For the “no” items, determine if the items can be re-purposed. Consider donating to Salvation Army if possible, or Goodwill. Or you can donate online with https://www.thredup.com/.
Capsule
Now that you have a newly organized and styled closet, develop a capsule from your current wardrobe. Based on your personal style, what are the 8-10 items that are the foundation of your style? These will be items that are really versatile. A crisp, white cotton button up? A flattering LBD? A perfect fitting pair of jeans? That kick ass pair of boots? Determine if you are missing anything from your capsule and add to a targeted shopping list. Things to keep in mind
When shopping, seek out clothes that fit you well. The best way to look good is to feel good, and a perfect fit can facilitate exactly that. Clothing that is too tight can make you feel uncomfortable, while clothes that are too loose may make you appear unkempt.
Dress to impress. But be selective. Don’t jump on the latest trends just to fit in. Who wants to look like everyone else? Limit trendy fashion purchases. Trendy fashion is usually seasonal, which means it is made for the short term and likely not high quality and it won’t last. “Fashion changes, but style endures” ~Coco Chanel
Dress your truth. Embrace your unique style. Wear your clothes, don’t let your clothes wear you. Express yourself rather than fit into someone else’s idea of trendy or cool. Unleash your creativity, boost your self-confidence, and ultimately transform not only your wardrobe, but your whole world.
Alterations
Invest in alterations. Do you have wardrobe items that you wish you felt great in but every time you try it on there’s something just not right? Determine if alterations are needed. Keep in mind, this doesn’t just relate to clothing; I’ve had boots altered because I have very skinny calves! Alterations can be your best kept secret for that made for you fit.
Accessorize.
Don’t forget to accessorize! It can really complete an outfit. Consider accessories outside of jewelry, shoes, belts and handbags. How about with make up, cool sunglasses, or a stylish hat, or even a wig? Many years ago, I worked with someone who was so stylish and put together, she always wore cool eyeglasses that matched her outfit. I found out she didn’t even need eyeglasses – they were purely just an accessory for her! Be creative!
Remember, your personal style is a form of self-expression. It allows you to communicate your personality without uttering a word. So invest time and thought into your outfits. Don’t just dress for the occasion, dress for yourself. And dressing for comfort should not mean compromising on style. Your wardrobe should compliment you perfectly.
